So often as writers we are asking ourselves to explore possibilities: in our storylines, of our conflicts and resolutions, and of so many other pieces of the craft. But penning that exploration is normally left undone in order to hone our work and cut confusion.
Instead of leaving out the way you examine the narrative as it’s created, create a piece that is entirely about exploring the possible directions your writing can take. Perhaps the main character, or the poem’s voice, is debating with themselves or another character. Perhaps even you, as the writer, are discussing these would-be streams of story with the actors themselves. If your mind is a wanderer, embrace that wandering and wonder!
Be absorbed in the possibilities of the world you’re creating, and let your characters be absorbed in them as well. The only rule is to incorporate a decision made from your wondering into the ending of your piece: give yourself and your content the finality of resolution.
Remember: rules are to be broken when necessary, and prompts are just a jumping off point. If your writing takes a turn from the prompt, no worries! I won’t be mad at ya 😉
Happy Writing!
